Earlier this morning, Star Wars officially released the title for the upcoming release in the Skywalker saga. As usual when there’s an announcement in the Star Wars Universe, people are madly speculating as to what we might be able to expect.
According to Starwars.com the official title for Episode VIII is Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
Sounds ominous doesn’t it? With the recent passing of the beloved Princess Leia, the film was already bound to be an emotional sucker punch, but adding that title into the mix adds another layer of heaviness for sure.
Also, Star Wars fans are nothing if not detail oriented. It was nearly instantly recognized that in all of the previous Star Wars films, only two had red titles. Revenge of the Sith and Return of the Jedi. My own personal thoughts on this are that both of those films had the death of a Skywalker in them. Revenge of the Sith could count Anakin’s ‘death’ as he turned to Vader. Return of the Jedi had Anakin/Vader’s actual death. It could mean a few things. Death of the mother and the father? We’re more inclined to think it has something with the two ‘deaths’ of Anakin. It’s also possible it could mean the deaths of both mother and father in the Skyalker saga. (Padme and Anakin.) So is the red because of how they will address Fisher’s loss? It makes sense but it also opens more questions.
It is possible the red might symbolize the turning of a Jedi. Anakin turned into Vader in Revenge but back to the light side in Return. So do we have some hope for Kylo here? Could it be possible that he might get turned around and end up fighting the very plans he put into place?
Or, could the red signify a major shift in the Jedi story as a whole? In both Revenge and Return, the Jedi story arc made a very specific and direct shift to a new direction. So it’s possible the red has something to do with the Jedi as a whole rather than the Skywalkers.
One thing is certain in all of this though. The incredible team behind Star Wars knows their fans. Nothing is done by accident. You can be sure they will have a reason for this that goes well beyond mere graphic design.
One of our resident Star Wars gurus, Michelle Germann, has some thoughts about what we might see in Episode VIII – watch for her thoughts coming soon.
