From her very first story about Scary, the ghost, Susan Tolleson has loved putting words to paper. She is a freelance writer and editor with more than 25 years of strategic communications experience. Most recently, she has worked with Christian non-fiction authors to help them write their book or proposal. Susan is a copy editor with Good Catch Publishing and a writer for Speaking.com. She also writes and edits for a number of nonprofit and ministry organizations.
Susan began her writing career as a reporter at the Northwest Arkansas Times. After moving to Kansas City, she served as an award-winning editor for an international engineering firm, and then public relations manager for the Kansas City Zoo during its $87 million renovation. Susan then took on communications roles at the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, where she left as vice president of communications in 2003. Susan also has conducted successful public relations campaigns for an advertising agency, and managed public involvement plans for infrastructure projects while at a small agency and international engineering firm.
Susan’s writing has been included in a Group Publishing devotional book and Zoe Group’s New Wineskins magazine, and she edited the 2011 daily devotional book for LeadHer ministries. She has won a Best in Show and several Bronze Quills from the International Association of Business Communicators, and several PRISMS and Silver Awards from the Public Relations Society of America.
As the daughter of a career military officer, Susan has lived in Southern and Central California, Tennessee, Indiana, Washington, D.C., New Jersey and Frankfurt, West Germany. She graduated from high school in Salinas, California, home of well-known author John Steinbeck. Susan has a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Harding University, and a master’s degree in marketing communications from the University of Kansas. She and her husband cheer on the Kansas City Royals from the suburban home they share with their teenage daughter and two crazy dogs.
